April 2013 favorites

Quick entry. I'm flying overseas soon. =)

SUNPLAY SPF 60+ PA+++ Water kids:
Mild & Gentle, Hypo-allergenic

My skin is getting drier; aging skin. (=.=)''''' I was more of oily to combination previously...but now I think I'm just combination to normal or simply normal with slightly oilier t-zone. Instead of using my usual Biore sebum control sunscreen(white bottle), now I switch to this; a more hydrating formula. The higher SPF doesnt hurt too. Hydrating, cooling, still pretty light(not oily), doesnt feels heavy on skin or under makeup. Hypo-allergenic, does not make me break out. Easy on the pocket too. Watson has it.

Mini hairclips from Mini.bits(Korea)

I supposed they're considered beauty items too since they do a part in creating hairstyles. I usually grab a small portion of hair on top, twist it lightly into a "puff" and secure with a mini hair-clip behind. We call it the curry-pok hairstyle too. Haha. It helps to create volume so as not to let the hair look flat, and you can also look taller! These are pretty good quality clips and have a good grip. I feel they're quite on par with HELEN's and what's more, they're only S$3+ each. I've dropped a couple of times actually, thank god, they didnt break

Garnier, Pure 3in1 Wash, Scrub, Mask

This works great as a scrub as well as a purifying mask. Leaves skin feeling polished and clean. However, I dont use it as a facial wash; i.e, I dont use it when my face is dirty because I dont feel safe scrubbing my face all over with it's dirt. Leaves a very refreshing and minty feeling too.

Marc Anthony 2nd day Clear Dry Shampoo (Spray)

Basically, being a hygiene freak that I am, naturally I prefer washing my hair in the traditional way, with water. BUT, when I'm rushing for time especially just for a casual, short lunch out with dearie in the neighborhoods, this is great. You simply spray it into your scalp and hair and it's amazing how clean and fresh your scalp feels after that. And your hair simply looks cleaner, less dull with a bit of shine. It doesnt weigh your hair down further, although there's a limit to how full your hair can look when it's unfresh(unless you have a hell lot of hair). It doesnt leave any powdery residue behind(which you need to massage in, for some other dry shampoos). And it doesnt feel like there's any residue on your scalp too. For my oily and sensitive scalp, I did not feel any irritations at all. Light fragrance which doesnt lingers. It will be great if they can come up with a smaller bottle for portability.

Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Jelly SPF 30 PA+++

Initially I use this for face but I was kinda sensitive to it so I used it on my body instead, so as not to waste it. Other than offering UV protection, this watery jelly cools the skin down and doesnt leave any sticky feeling behind while offering some hydration. Great for afternoons! I seldom get any sun and since this is only a SPF 30, I slather it on my hands and legs when I go central to grab lunch because I do get some sun when crossing the roads.

The Face Shop, Oil Specialist Brightening cleansing oil with prune

I was looking for a cleansing oil to replace my fave cleansing oil from Biore(blue bottle) which got discontinued. And I feel this is by far the best I tried(DHC sucks btw). Nice smell. Cleans very well including waterproof eye-makeup and eyelash glue etc, no oily residue behind either, although it's my habit to double cleanse. The only weird thing is, after you massage it all over your face and eventually add water to emulsify it, instead of emulsifying, it kinda turn into a cleansing cream. It's kinda thick and I have to use ALOT of water and more time to wash it off. Well, ultimately it did cleanse very well, that's all it matters. It does brightens up the face too.

Secret Key, So Fast Shampoo (Korea)

My hair length has been pretty stagnant for a long time. It just cant grow past the boobs length ever since I cut it. So I bought this from Qoo10 and there's alot of info on the ingredients which they used; mainly black-coloured ingredients like black beans etc because black-coloured food are supposed to support our kidneys and kidneys holds the key to our hair health, or so I though. It's main objective is to combat hair loss and accelerates your hair growth. I dont see it's anti hair-loss effect, my hair fall is pretty much the same to me. But my hair really grows so much faster ever since I started using this. I've used about 50% of it....for like a few weeks? And my hair has grew past my boobs....it's around 1.5inches or more of hair growth! I'm loving my hair length now. =) It's quite moisturizing so it's easy to lather and doesnt leave your hair feeling dry. Which also means, it's not very suitable for people with oily scalp like me. Around 5hours or more, I can feel my scalp getting oily. So I usually use this when I know I will be home not too long later so that I can wash my hair before I sleep. It reacts differently to different people. Dearie experienced itchy scalp after using it but I am okay. For people who wish to grow their hair longer and faster, this is highly recommended!

Babyliss expert 38mm Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Iron CD109K

I've never been familiar with using curling tongs. Probably used less than 5times in my lifetime before I bought this. Call it an insane impulse, but I got this for around S$45 from Qoo10 and has never looked back since. Babyliss is a renowned brand for hair tongs, still, I dont wish to spend so much on something which I seldom use. Had used it for 3 consecutive days and I love it to bits. It's super thick barrel can create tons of volume with natural looking waves or curls(depending on how you hold the barrel, vertical or horizontal). If you tong it with bigger portions of hair by holding the tong horizontal, in fact, it doesnt even look like the hair is tonged. It merely look naturally voluminous, romantic and sexy as if you're born with great hair. I definitely love the "natural" or "maybe she's born with it" look. If you want more defined curls(tonged look), then grab smaller portions of hair and also tong it slightly longer. It can go up to as high as 200degrees. Heats up extremely fast. Can rest on table without burning your table top. Tourmaline coated tongs is said to leave your hair more shiny and less damaged because it seals the moisture in your hair bla bla. Better to finish it with an hair spray because big curls/waves generally doesnt last that long.

John Frieda Luxurious Volume All-day hold hair-spray

The words which caught my eyes are, "touchably soft", "finishes naturally" and "for fine hair" because I dont like hair sprays which make my hair look stiff and all sticked together in ringlets. True enough, it gives flexible hold while still leaving your hair look natural and feels pretty soft. Of course it still feels like you've sprayed on something but it's still nice to touch and not as sticky as some other hair sprays. Granted, the 24hrs hold is definitely not true. At least for big curls/waves, it can only hold up to 6 hours. Despite so, my tonged hair(with the above mentioned Babyliss tongs) still look pretty artlessly tousled and romantic with the curl ends after 6hrs so I dont mind the poor holding power. =) Fragrance is nice, not too strong.

DON’T SLEEP LATE............?

Saw this on facebook.

“ DON’T SLEEP LATE! “.

Good rest and sound sleep is very important... if u don't sleep well,
The toxins in your body will accumulate... Affecting your health and your
mood...

The main causes of liver damage are:
1. Sleeping too late and waking up too late are the main cause..
2. Not urinating in the morning.
3. Too much eating.
4. Skipping breakfast.
5. Consuming too much medication.
6. Consuming too much preservatives, additives, food coloring, and artificial
sweetener.
7. Consuming unhealthy cooking oil. As much as possible reduce cooking oil use
when frying, which includes even the best Cooking oils like olive oil. Do not
consume fried foods when you are tired, except if the body is very fit.
8. Consuming overly done foods also add to the burden of liver. Veggies should
be eaten raw or cooked 3-5 parts. Fried
Veggies should be finished in one sitting, do not store.

We have to adopt a good daily lifestyle and eating habits. Maintaining good
eating habits is very important for our body to absorb and get rid of
unnecessary chemicals.

Because….
Evening 9 - 11pm: is the time for eliminating unnecessary/ toxic chemicals (de-
toxification) from the antibody system (lymph nodes). This time duration should
be spent by relaxing or listening to music. If during this time a housewife is
still in a un relaxed state such as washing the dishes or monitoring children
doing their homework, this will have a negative impact on her health.

Night at 11pm - 1am: The de-toxification process in the liver, and ideally
should be done in a deep sleep state.

Early morning 1 - 3am: de-toxification process in the gall, also ideally done in
a deep sleep state.

Early morning 3 - 5am: de-toxification in the lungs. Therefore there will
sometimes be a severe cough for cough sufferers during this time. Since the
de-toxification process had reached the respiratory tract, there is no need to
take cough medicine so as not to interfere with toxin removal process.

Morning 5 - 7am: de-toxification in the colon, you should empty your bowel.

Morning 7 - 9am: Absorption of nutrients in the small intestine, you should be
having breakfast at this time. Breakfast should be earlier, before 6:30am, for
those who are sick. Breakfast before 7:30am is very beneficial to those wanting
to stay fit. Those who always skip breakfast, they should change their habits,
and it is still better to eat breakfast late until 9 -10am rather than no meal
at all. Sleeping so late and waking up too late will disrupt the process of
removing unnecessary chemicals.

Midnight to 4am is the time when the bone marrow produces blood.

Therefore, have a good sleep and don't sleep late.

Sounds pretty real..... But I wonder is it really true.... Because put it this way.....people staying at locations with time difference like U.S etc, will sleep at our unhealthy hours. So how will our body know what time is it?? Unless it has GPRS also lor.

So damn cute!! Why Vickki cant do the same. Hahaha!

Movie(online): 狼牙 (Legendary Assassin)

Movie: 狼牙 (Legendary Assassin)
Ratings: 4/5
Comments: Chanced upon this movie by chance in youtube and boy was I impressed!! I've always know 吳京(Jacky Wu) is a great fighter but he was especially suave and charming in this show with his swift, tough and lethal kicks!!!! Absolutely eye-catching! Ever since Jet Li semi-retired, nobody seems to be able to replace him in my heart.....until him. HAHAHA. Like Jet, he practiced martial arts since young(6 years old) and he also won the championship in many national Wushu competitions, like 拳、槍、刀 at a tender age of 12. Dont you feel males who can fight so suavely are so damn cool and sexy....kekeke. Oh and he also co-directed this film, his first. Isnt him so talented? =P He looks so young with his boyish looks....but he's actually 43... Got a shock!

By the way, I should definitely mention the female lead too, Celina Jade, who impressed me with her fluent Cantonese and Chinese. She acted and fought fairly well(of course pale in comparison to 吳京). And please do watch till the end where you can hear her sing "曾經心疼"(Sally Yeh's song). It IS SO GOOD!!! Sally is great in this song but Celina really showed her style and power in this new remix version(below). And I loveeeee it very very very much. Has been looping it in my laptop and hp!!

Please just listen to this song. You probably cant believe this is sang by a mixed blood; she's a half Chinese, Spanish, French, English and American Indian. And after googling about her, I then realized she's a model, actress, singer, songwriter(WOW!) and martial artist(Cool!) who work in Hollywood films. Not only she's drop dead gorgeous, this young lass got a good head on her shoulders and also graduated with first class honors for her Management degree in London.

I simply wish these 2 super talented artists all the best in their future endeavors and would love to see more of their works!!

Movie Review: Drug War & Reminiscence of old movie(online)

Caught this on youtube. I just seem to love old movies. =)

Movie title:
Ratings: 4/5
Funny and romantic.....I smiled to myself after finishing the show alone(dearie sleeping). It's really sweet(oh well it's a movie).

Love the song in the show too.

(Almost) Everyday, I will count my blessings. Whenever dearie make an effort to come fetch me, or buy me supper or a simple "miss you" message, will just make my day. I know, kinda silly right. Haha~ I know he can get so tired sometimes but he'll still try to spend time with me. Like how he caught a movie with me just now. So, a new movie review below. =)

Movie title: Drug War
Ratings: 3/5
Comments: It was okie...not very thrilling....kinda boring in the middle....and near the ending, there were quite a series of scenes that made me rolled my eyes so thoroughly...Ok might as well tell you, it's like the police and the bad guys were just standing there in the OPEN and shooting each other without trying to find something to block them.

I was whispering to dearie, "They never play counterstrike before meh? Where got chiong and stand in the open and shoot like that one? Of course must hide behind something whatttttt". Dearie's answer was classic, "This has nothing to do with playing counterstrike or not, this has got to do with got brain or not." Muahahahaha. My dearie so funny.

The ending kinda sucks too. Everybody dieeeeeees~ Okie, catch the show if you reallllllyyyy got nothing to do.

******************************************************************************

Just now when I was walking through my basement carpark, I saw a man behaving sneakily. I was really peering him over until I saw him putting something on a car's windscreen. Upon seeing me, he fled as if he did something shameful. It was then that I realized it was a summon which he issued. Looking back at him, who already had his back to me, yes, there was this bulky "summon issue machine" in his hand.

"Fatimahs" nowadays no need wear uniform mehhhhhh??? He was in civilian clothing. I wish to take a picture of him but somehow he fled and simply disappear!

So desperate for fines until catch also catch like a sneaky thief like that mehhhhh??

Our government. Hng~

I thought the "hide in the bushes with camera" was classic; I saw once before during RAINY days and the poor officer still taking an umbrella while hiding in the bushes. So poor thing, he must be acting under orders to act like...this...... Oh well, I wonder what will be an encore.

If really so hard up for fines, I really encourage them to act as civilians at bus stops and traffic lights and catch those smokers smoking instead!!! Really!!! I think that's really more meaningful. 2nd hand smoke causes cancer you know~ And there can be young children and babies at bus stops and traffic lights. It's so detrimental to their health.

I hate that time of the month....my migraine haunts me non-stop...not to mention my backaches. =(

Movie Review(online): 降頭 Gong Tau

Movie title(watched online): 降頭 Gong Tau
Ratings: 4/5

I caught this online last night. And I think it's a great Asian terror movie with black magic as theme.  HK is more popular for producing action films and this is a very outstanding horror/thriller which I felt deserves a recommendation. Thumbs up! Very thrilling with some gruesome and nudity scenes, please watch only if you're above 18 and has a strong stomach.

降頭, which we Asians commonly refer it as, is quite a taboo object. As intriguing as it is, to me at least, few people know much about it. But I believe, in our circles, we would have more or less heard stuff about it. Like my colleague who had an Indonesian maid mix her urine in the water and gave it to my colleague's family to drink. My colleague reported her to her agency after she felt the water tasteed weird and the maid also admitted her wrongdoings, saying by doing so, the family will listen to her bidding. My FIL and a long-time uncle of mine also said it exists and the latter had seen it before. So I do believe it exists. Especially in countries like Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, especially in the rural areas.

桃花降, or love spell or whatever it is call, is the most commonly said/used, or so I heard. Haha. Hope the movie can teach some guys a lesson, that not all things can be paid or settled with money

Sometimes you have to pay in other ways~ =)

Movie Review: Olympus has fallen

Movie title: Olympus has fallen
Ratings: 4.5/5
Comments: A great thriller! Quite 1 of the best shows I've grabbed for this past 6mths or so. Never a boring moment. Funny parts here and there. 1 irritating thing though, the lighting for the film is SO DARK. It's damn fucked up, spoils the entire movie, in a way. I had to squint so hard for the entire show. However all in all, it's a great flick not to be missed!

Movie Review: Oblivion

Movie title: Oblivion
Ratings: 1/5
Comments: Too slow, too draggy, boring, not thrilling, lousy ending. I nearly died during the first 1hour+. That's about it. During the show, many people walk in and out, including me(once of course only, to the ladies). Tom Cruise's movies has always been a must-watch for me, just like Jackie Chan. However, ever since the drop in standard as in "Jack Reacher" and now this, I'm quite sure next time I will think twice about watching his movies. As for those rating it a 4 out of 5 at gv.com.sg, hmm.....I seriously dont know what they are thinking.

Philips Air Fryer Recipe: Clams and mushroom cheese baked rice!! Super yummy!!! =P

I was simply hunting for ingredients to cook in all my cupboards and fridge, and finally I realized I can make this!

I have to share this recipe as well as posting it here so that I'll remember how to cook it again in future. It tastessssss SO GOOD!! I'm not kidding you! Initially Jy cooked this(she used chicken instead of clams though) and shared on her FB so I asked her for the recipe when it looks so good. And after sharing with me, she also said this one thing, "This is super nice and super easy! After you tried this, you wont even order this in restaurant anymore."

I simply thought, wow, okie it must be good. But I didnt expect it's thattttt good! I think it's even better than Swensen's! Okie, enough of the ramblings. I did alter many things from Jy's recipe because I only have canned clams and canned mushrooms at home. HAHAHA! Thank god I have Campbell's soup and some cheese slices though!

Ingredients: (Serves 1, male's portion)
Uncooked rice, 3/4 cup
Narcissus brand, Canned mushrooms, sliced, half a can
New Moon brand, Canned razor clams(贵妃鲍贝), half a can
Campbell's 1/4 canned soup paste, chicken & mushroom flavour
McCormicks, ground black pepper
White pepper
Light Soy Sauce
Chesdale, herb & garlic cheese(comes in packet of slices)(2 slices)

Method:
1) Cook 3/4 cup rice in rice cooker(I'm using Philips), adding slightly more water than needed to cook it normally. Place it in a bowl once it's cooked immediately, which should be a little moist.
2) Marinate clams with 1 teaspoon of light soya sauce and lots of white pepper
3) Boil Campbell's soup(around 3 heaped tbspoons of paste) to a thick consistency. It comes up to around 70% cup of soup
4) Sliced the mushrooms and retaining some of it's mushroom water, stir-fry them with light soya sauce and black pepper. Put aside
5) Get a aluminium foil bowl(I make one from aluminium foil) that can fit into the Philips Airfryer. Pour 1/3 of the soup at the base
6) Add the rice, which should be slightly damp. Placed mushrooms on it evenly, followed by the raw clams. Pour the rest of the soup all over it. Dash some black pepper over
7) Place 2 pieces of cheese to cover the whole dish. Dash some black pepper.
8) Airfry it with Philips Airfryer at 160degrees for 9-10minutes. Not any longer. And serveeeeee~

This dish is extremely healthy as no oil/butter and salt is used throughout(altered from Jy's recipe). Well, maybe just the cheese. =D
The clams tasted great, just the right degree of chewiness and the rice is just full of flavour without being too salty and not too dry or hard. I hate hard rice.

Love love love this!~!~ Do try out!

Alternatives and Notes:
- If you wish to replace clams with others, feel free to. Just take note for ingredients that need a longer time to get cook, for e.g, chicken, you'll need to semi-cook them before you airfry the whole dish. On the other hand, seafood which needs less time to be cooked, you can cook it in the same way as the clams.
-  The flavour of soup and type of cheese can be altered to your preference too.
- If you need to reduce the quantity of rice because you're on a carbo diet, you can reduce to...say 1/4 cup. But if you reduce the quantity of rice, you'll need to reduce the quantity of other ingredients too as well as the quantity of soup(else the baked rice will be too "wet").

This is the original Chicken and Mushroom cheese baked rice recipe Jy had: You can try too!

Ingredients
(Serves 4-6)
- 1 1/2 cups uncooked rice, rinsed and drained
- Water to cook rice
- 5 garlic cloves
- 200g (white or brown) button mushrooms, sliced
- 200g chicken fillet, cubed
- 15g butter
- a few tablespoons uncooked Campbell’s cream of mushroom soup
- Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
- Shredded Cheddar Cheese (I use mild red cheddar)
- Salt & Pepper
- Parsley (garnishing)
Directions
1. In a heated wok or saucepan, melt the butter. Add the sliced mushrooms and cut chicken pieces, stir-fry for a few minutes until the surface of the chicken pieces is white.
2. Add the washed uncooked rice, salt and black pepper to taste. Stir well. Transfer contents of wok/pan to a rice cooker. Add the garlic cloves. Add water to cook rice (I use slightly more than 1 1/2 cups of water – adjust the water amount according to your cooker).
3. When the rice is cooked, portion out the rice into individual oven-safe baking dishes (or use a 20cm x 20 cm square alumnium tray) until about half the height of the dish. ( I use oven safe bowl that can fit in airfryer)
4. Spread some mushroom soup sauce ( Campbell brand) on top of the rice, and topped with a layer of shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
5. Airfry it at 180degrees for 10minutes. Garnish with parsley.

Wow hers sure looked more complicated. Lol. I seldom have fresh ingredients in my fridge because I cant be sure when I have the time to cook so I dont buy and store in my freezer; for fear of them getting not fresh. So mine are usually canned food. =( But I'm still very glad that my dishes turned out nice. Of course I still love cooking fresh food too like chicken, pork and especially fish. But I think I can only cook them when I have half a day free.

Aglio Olio with black pepper smoked duck

Aglio Olio with black pepper smoked duck

Yesterday I cooked this and I was so surprised it turned out so tasty and declious despite I lack of much fresh ingredients. I thought, it tastes quite as good as what was served outside in restaurants, and interestingly, dearie remarked out loud the same thought which I didnt say out.

These are the staple ingredients! All available from NTUC.
As I said, I lack of fresh ingredients like garlic which is essential in making aglio olio.
Awwww.......but thankfully I found replacements in my fridge; as per the above picture. Hee.

Ingredients:
Duck Chef, ready-cooked black pepper smoked duck breast
Masterfoods, garlic powder
McCormick, pure ground black pepper
JJW, fried garlic with oil
Spaghetti
Salt
Chillipadi(1 piece for portions of 2)

Method:
1) Boil the spaghetti(2 person share) in water for 15minutes with some salt and little olive oil(if you like al dente style then cook it for 10-12minutes)
2) Remove the spaghetti from the boiling water and run it under the tap(cold water), sieve the water away and put it aside
3) Remove the ready-cooked black pepper smoked duck from it's packet(after leaving it outside for around 10mins after taking out from the freezer) and seared it on pan for few minutes on both sides, flipping it time to time.
4) Sauce/juice will ooze out from the duck. Remove the duck and place it aside to cool
5) (No need oil) Use the sauce to cook the pasta, stir-frying it together with 1 tbspoon of fried garlic(without the oil), some salt, black pepper, 1 tbspoon garlic powder and the little chillipadi(halved, removed the seeds with gloves) for few minutes.
6) Slice the smoked duck. If it's still hot, use tongs to hold it. It might be cold in the middle(as we seared it when it's frozen). Place the sliced smoked duck onto aluminium foil and airfry in Philips Airfryer at 200degrees for 3-4 minutes(If you dont have Philips Airfryer, just microwave it for 1min or so)
7) Serve pasta on plate, arranged sliced duck on pasta. Both served hot.

The above recipe is mild spicy, serves 2.

FAQ
1) Why sear the smoked duck when it's frozen, because cooking will definitely be uneven(cold in the middle)
Because I defrosted the duck before searing it before(for my smoked duck salad with mandarin oranges) and it yields almost no sauce/juice. I need the sauce to cook the pasta.

2) Can I sear the frozen duck for more than a few minutes so that the inside will be hot as well?
But if this way, the outer of the duck will definitely be overcooked and will be tough. So it's better to sear it on the outside(just to get it's juice) and then later airfry/microwave it when it's sliced, to get a better texture overall. Also to warm it up to serve it together with the pasta, as it would be chilled while we cook the pasta.

Alternatives:
Fresh garlic, sliced(maybe half a cup or lesser) can be used in place of the fried garlic and garlic powder. The latter 2 is good to store in your fridge as they will not go bad so fast like fresh garlic.

Oh yes, I've gotten my Philips air fryer! Have cooked using it and it was AWESOME. Will post recipes/pictures/review soon!

My favorite teeth whitening products

Firstly...I would like to say I DONT have startlingly white teeth which captures everyone's attention; like you know some people have teeth SO white that the moment you look at them, your gaze will be locked to their extremely white teeth. I saw 1 lady with amazing white teeth before which I cant help but stare. They're so white that they looked kinda artificial. You'll know she must have done laser whitening or some clinical procedures before. Frankly speaking, while the teeth are extremely nice, let's just say her complexion doesnt really quite match up to it. I then realize, when your teeth are wayyyyy too outstanding and amazingly white, it can make your complexion look less good because of the big contrast. But of course, if you have great skin then go ahead and whiten your teeth by laser or other aggressive clinical procedures! You'll look like a superstar!!

That's how I feel. Of course, you're entitled to your own views.

I dont have amazing white teeth, dont have amazing skin. I just thought they're...matching, in a way and well....acceptable to me. But I have friends asking me what I use to whiten my teeth or what is my favorite whitening toothpaste etc time to time again. My way is more economical and less aggressive as it takes longer time. Most of my girlfriends are far too rich and eager for results, haha, so most of them did whitening at dental clinics. I heard it can range from S$500-$800 or even more. It's actually pretty cheap to do in JB, so I heard..maybe S$300 or lesser. But then, I never fancy myself siting in a dentist's chair(my horror!!) and I dont like going for clinical procedures; it's just me. I still prefer to get whiter teeth in a "light-duty" way. I dont wish to get much whiter teeth overnight and have people coming to ask me what I've done.

Some background info FYI
I dont smoke.
I dont drink coffee. Tea, sometimes.
I brush my teeth once everyday after I wake up
Ever since I graduated from primary school(yes primary...eons ago...compulsory dental checks)....I've never let another dentist see my teeth.

Kinda gross huh~ Lol.

So the product which I use to whiten my teeth is the Crest Whitestrips.
The above comes with 20 strips at US$49.90.
I kinda remember I used to buy 40 strips(another box, not available anymore) at about US$70.
Hmmm.........inflation.....maybe. I usually buy 2-3 boxes at 1 go to save on shipping.

It's not available in Singapore. You can get from U.S or order online from drugstore.com. Alternatively, join livejournal sprees to cut down on shipping. Maybe you'll feel they're not very cheap but I truly swear by them IF you use it the correct way. They're much cheaper than other clinical whitening methods. And I truly feel the results are comparable to clinical whitening methods, to which some of my friends had tried. Just that it takes a longer time.

Initially I wish to show some before-and-after-pics to convince of the effectiveness of my favorite products. But because every picture of me alone taken at different locations under different lightings etc, might be an inaccurate conclusion. So I wanted to post pictures where I was with my bunch of friends, which should be the best way to show how does the shade of my teeth fare. In some instances, I even thought of the perfect way by proving the effectiveness of the products, for e.g, by showing a group picture few years apart. Like, for e.g, once upon a time, my teeth was less white than Miss A but after I've used my favorite products, my teeth are whiter than Miss A.

But...after thinking for a sec, I think if I put up group pictures and shamelessly show that my teeth is whiter, it is pretty anal, insensitive and rude! Girls are pretty sensitive and my girl friends will definitely hate me! Lol....so...well...no pictures! But no pictures also not convincing huh~ Alright, maybe just 1. Guys are not that sensitive. :P I seldom take pictures with a bunch of guys...this might be the 1 and only pic. Sorry no choice.

This was taken last Aug, 2012
Normal toothpaste but on monthly maintenance of Crest Whitestrips.

Simply stick the strips to both your upper and lower set of teeth, wait for 30minutes, peel off and rinse your mouth. Sounds easy? Not that easy actually. A friend bought it after I told her this is what I use. She only use once and twice and then gave up. Why?

First experience
You might feel uncomfortable because you're not used to it. Crest WhiteStrips has changed from an older version. The older version works better actually; whitens even better, but in a way, more potent. The strips also shift more easily on the teeth because of it's gel surface. As time advances, saliva will accumulate and you feel you have a mess in your mouth, which can be quite unbearable to some people, for e.g, my friend. Now that it's the newer version. It sticks pretty well, doesnt shift easily. Less potent, more acceptable to people with sensitive teeth.

Tips#
1) Use it when your mouth is dry or as dry as you can have them(not after having drinks or brushing your teeth)

Saliva will starts to accumulate in your mouth as time advances and these saliva will create discomfort in your mouth and may cause the strips to shift. SO,

2) Keep your tongue close to the BACK of your lower set of teeth. Let your tongue stays there. They will "guard" any saliva which comes to the front of your mouth and get "mixed" with your strips.

3) Swallow any saliva which accumulates in your mouth. Since they dont get "mixed" with the strips(which contains whitening ingredients), it's safe to swallow.

4) Consistency is the key for every beauty regime.
For the first 2 weeks, do it intensively once everyday for 30minutes. If you dont have sensitive teeth like me, sometimes I put up to 35mins for each treatment. If you have sensitive teeth, put for shorter time like 20minutes instead of 30.  However, remove immediately if you feel any "stinging" feeling.

5) You can continue to do it intensively everyday until you get your desired results. But of course stop if you feel your teeth starts getting sensitive. After you achieved your desired results, then reduce to maybe once per week, once per month etc.

6) Avoid food/drinks which might stain teeth if you're on treatment. Like red wine, coffee etc.

I achieved a whiter set of teeth in a span of maybe 3 to 5months. Dont quite remember. Because I did not use it everyday. I started using once everyday for like 2weeks...and then reduce to once every 3days, so on and so forth. Subsequently, I've realized I can no longer whiten my teeth further(no significant results anymore)...and I'm also satisfied with it....so eventually I use it as maintence like maybe once a month or just before any special events, like weddings etc.

Taken in Jul 2011....,my hair was short then. Was on fortnightly maintenance of Crest White Strips
Like I say, different lightings. Difficult to judge accuracy. But I'm fairer than this shade actually.

But I myself feel the results are pretty lasting, if you care to believe me.

IMPT NOTES:
Please note that these strips have EXPIRY DATE. FYI, I dont brush BEFORE or AFTER the treatment because I tried once and my teeth bled. Somehow I had the sensitive stinging feeling too IF I brush my teeth before or after the treatment. But whilst I was using it and even after using it, my teeth did not get more sensitive. Which is something positive, as my friend told me after her laser whitening, her teeth got so sensitive even with iced water. And, Crest Whitestrips actually works better on neat sets of teeth because you need to stick the strips onto your teeth and naturally, a neater set of teeth can ensure better adherance, and hence higher efficiency. I dont have perfect teeth(never did braces before)....but I guess so long so your teeth is not mostly, overly crooked, then it's fine.

Actually I've stopped using it for quite a long time(more than half a year)...I just forgot about using it or simply lazy to order it online. But I guess my teeth are ok because I dont smoke or drink coffee etc. In fact, I tend to stick to white wine thereafter. I seldom drink red wine nowadays unless at weddings.

So in place of Crest White Strips, I've been trying out many whitening toothpastes. You need to brush your teeth everyday anyway, no matter you want to whiten them or not. I wish to get an effective one which is easy available in Singapore. But disappointingly, so far none gave significant results. Until I tried this.........

Sensodyne Whitening, Repair and Protect

This is a new product I think and I just started using it like months ago. I feel it whitens pretty well(though of course not as significant as Crest White Strips). I say, you can see a difference after just 1 tube. What's more, it's good for sensitive teeth because the toothpaste turns warm when gets in contact with your teeth! How amazing!! The bad side is it probably costs 3times more than a regular toothpaste(my favorite darlie, orginal). It costs around S$8.50 for a small tube and sharing it with dearie probably cant lasts us more than.....3 weeks? Even though we only brush once everyday. Dont know, it seems to finish up so much faster than our regular toothpaste. =( The best promo I've seen is S$5 per tube and I always grab up to a dozen at 1 go. =P

Most recent pic(true to real life) after using Sensodyne Whitening, Repair and Protect for just few weeks.

I've tried other brands which are as expensive as S$20+ per tube(that's the max I'm willing to go. But bigger tube though) and I still feel Sensodyne is better. =)

Please DONT try this. Waste of money. Does not whiten at all.

Feel free to share your favorite whitening toothpastes/products(if any)!! =)
Thanks for reading............

Movie Review: Saving General Yang

Movie title: Saving General Yang
Ratings: 4.3/5
Comments: A very much anticipated flick so I admit I have high expectations. Not a boring moment in the show although I would love to see more strategies and war deployment skills in a supposedly-war kinda show. Nevertheless, the fighting scenes were still engaging and I think almost all the cast acted very well in the show; depicting filial piety values which the modern world should appreciate more.

The story of uncles and aunties who clear your plates in food courts

Ever wondered what's the story of every auntie/uncle who clears your leftovers in the food center? http://keizng.com/confessions-of-a-food-court-cleaner/

Auntie Ah Zhu (Let's call her Auntie AZ) came to my table at Food Republic, Vivocity , repeatedly wanting to clear my plates I was still working on. By the 3rd time she came over, I realised it was because she wanted to wrap up her work (11pm at that time). She then noticed Josie fiddling with her notepad (kakao notepad giveaway from at an earlier event #startupasia), and remarked, "that's a beautiful notebook" (in mandarin). I then asked if she wanted one too, and offered mine. She gleefully accepted it like a proud owner, telling us the notepad would be useful for her to take down any new telephone numbers. I teased playfully, "Auntie, you sure it isn't for 4D or lottery numbers?"

Auntie AZ surprised us all with her reply, "I am going blind in a year due to diabetes, and I needed a big notepad with my failing eyesight". Obviously confused, I asked why she was working out late and doing such heavy chores, instead of resting at home and taking care of her body. Auntie AZ then explained that none of her 3 working and married children are supporting her financially (the occasional $100 bucks every now and then could barely help), and she wanted to save enough so she would be able to care for herself when she would be blind. Her husband is simply too lazy and aloof to depend on, while she felt that she wasn't a good enough mum when her kids were younger to justify caring for her. (e.g. not paying for their school fees during their polytechnic days, and not being attentive)

DAFUQ? Exactly what came up in my mind instantly! I reminded Auntie AZ she had endured 9 months (making it a total of almost 30 months) of harboring them in the belly, and not forgetting 3 painful deliveries. No matter how nasty a mum she had been, her kids can never escape she giving birth to them. Her guilt as a not-fantastic-mum was at best silly and naive; Mums are the most amazing people in the world. They can wipe the entire angry bird series and unlock level 100+ in candy crush, other than cooking the most delicious cuisines money can't buy. The only guilt she should feel is her love for sugar, which she giggled in a child-like manner, "i just can't avoid sweet things!". I can't imagine for a single moment how not 1, but all 3 kids can heartlessly ignore a diabetic mum patient who also endured extremely long hours at work putting them through their younger lives. Semi-luckily for Auntie AZ, one of her daughter-in-law was ensuring her husband connects to her occasionally.

Her pay of $1,300 monthly for working 6 days/week and 12 hours daily, after deducting CPF contributions, is hardly enough to sustain her treatments and living expenses. She also lamented that her legs were hurting from pushing the trolley and dragging the pail full of plates. In a slip of tongue, she revealed her suicidal tendencies, but kept positive at the thoughts/sights of her beloved grandkids. Under her breath, Auntie AZ murmured, "they are really cute..." (now I know why my candycrusher mum kept hurrying me for kids and not being so concerned about who the partner is).

But what is truly disappointing, as concluded by my friends Nicole LimJosie Lai,Abhinav Vinay ChandranAzmie Øregano who were with me, is the fact Auntie AZ is not alone. There are many similar, if not more unfortunate, old folks who are fighting to survive each day, collecting cans/papers and cleaning tables, with irresponsible, negligent children who have selfishly decided to cut off ties. I have met this 60+ year old eldery with swollen legs who collects newspapers/ cardboxes along Keong Saik road. She was looking for leftover food in the bins when I was leaving for home. Someone beat me to offering to buy her dinner - I then tried to help carry her load (which is easily 10kg) and walk her home, but she was very egoistic and refused my help - she was happy to just have a chat, and I supposed that's all I could do.

I am typing this at 5am on a Sat morning so I will not forget any details (even after 2 drinks), and not waste a single second moment I got home. I would like to appeal for any advice on government support Auntie AZ can seek, and if anyone can help her. I have her home contact number which I will gladly give you if you PM me, all I asked of is to be tactful when you speak to her. Let her know you are referred to by "Wen Bo or 文博", (my chinese name) whom she met in the food court on Friday night with a bunch of friends, so she knows the context.

If you are pretty helpless like the keyboard warrior me who isn't familiar with the government support, you could start clearing your own plates and dishes, and make the lives of Auntie AZ and her colleagues much easier in future. The very least you can do is not to mess things up your table too. If you have any friends who have such selfish mentalities like her kids, educate them.

And hey, don't forget to thank our cleaner heroes, and maybe engage in a conversation. Being a listening ear is effortless and goes a long way. Finally, the cliche "SHARE IF YOU CARE" applies here :)

p.s. photo from TNP. just for illustration purpose

Frankly speaking, everytime I see uncles or aunties clearing the plates at foodcourts, I always thank them politely....... I dont know....I just feel sorry for them. On the other hand, I cant help thinking why didnt they do a proper retirement planning when they're much healthier and able to earn more previously? The sadder thing is....I usually see more elderly walking around slowly with bended backs than cheerful, robust elderly doing such jobs. The more cheerful ones are mostly working in NTUC or driving a cabby, if you care to notice. Though....I do believe no one will be willing to do a more strenuous job on their failing age unless they dont have a choice.

And seriously....if Auntie AZ has insurance coverage.....she wont have to worry that much if her eyes really go blind because of her diabetic condition. FYI, in the past, coverage is accepted for diabetic patients but not anymore. Why? Because obviously the risk for complications are too high. Nobody can be sure if they can stay healthy all the way so the only way is to get yourself covered as early as you can. Responsible parents will get for their children the moment they're born as they're (usually) the healthiest at birth. For me, no kids(/yet). However, I also buy critical illness plan for my mum to transfer the risk of unforeseen circumstances, and god bless, if all are well, the monies will be for her retirement. My mum is not a spendthrift nor a gambler. Just that.....sometimes, if you don trust your parents with too much cash, like, if you're afraid they get conned especially if they trust people very easily, OR they easily give money out to less deserving people...........then this is a good way of making sure they have money if *touch wood* they ever grow sick OR eventually retired. I'm just saying..................

By the way, having a Will is also very important. It will make sure your estate is distributed according to your wishes.

As for the unfilial kids, people like this do exists. However, sometimes I feel it's the parents who have over-pampered them or did not do a good job in teaching them filial and piety values. Morally and emotionally speaking, every kid bears the responsibility of taking care of their parents when they grow old. But I prefer to think that one shouldnt depend on their kids for their retirement. If one day I have kids, I will take care of them, educate them, nurture them until they're fit to survive on their own. Of course, caring for them etc for as long as they allow me to. But, I will not depend on them nor expect them to live with me, this one old hag, unless of course they love to have me around to take care of their kids or something. Kids, will grow up, to have their own families, commitment, financial responsibilities etc.

Like they say,
And I say,

If I feel or know I probably dont have enough means to support myself if *touch wood* one day I grow blind, handicapped, contracted cancer and simply lost any ability to earn, I simply make sure I have enough savings or someone is there to pay for my living expenses. Of course, my husband definitely cant run away from this responsibility. But, how can I bear to exhaust all his hard-earned monies and lifelong savings on me? When he has done absolutely nothing wrong other than staying beside me.

I know only insurance can solve all this problems. They're much more reliable than our government and our children. Think about it~

My darling =D
